What are the similarities & differences between colonialism andimperialism?

Key terms:
Colonialism- the establishment of settler communities in areas ruled by various powers
Imperialism- a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or
                                    military force

Basically, imperialism is ruling foreign countries the same way as ruling over the home country.

In turn, colonialism is having governing influence over a dependent group of people, who answer to the overhead power.
